The Protection from Sex-Based Harassment in Public Act came into force on 1st April 2026, making it a criminal offence to intentionally harass someone in public because of their sex.

Key Points:

Behaviours like catcalling, following, or making lewd comments are now explicitly illegal
Offenders can face fines or up to 2 years in prison
The law applies to all public spaces, including Brighton Beach

The police are now taking a firmer stance on public sexual harassment. Sussex Police provide clear information about what constitutes a sexual offence, including harassment, and what happens when someone reports it.

Learn the 5Ds of Bystander Intervention: five practical methods anyone can use to intervene when witnessing harassment or unsafe situations

The 5Ds of Bystander Intervention:

Distract – Interrupt the situation without direct confrontation
Delegate – Seek help from someone else, like a lifeguard or call 999
Document – Record the incident, ensuring the victim’s safety and consent
Delay – Check in with the victim after the incident to offer support
Direct – If safe, address the harasser directly
